The island of Guernsey is rich in culture and known for its countless different traditions and exports, with many of its best museums and art galleries being either free or quite inexpensive. The history of the Guernsey Milk Can is explored at the Edwardian Tin and Coppersmith at the Sausmarez Manor, while precious diamonds and jewels can be seen at the island's Diamond Museum, in St. Sampsons.

An important time in Guernsey's history was during the Second World War, and this period shaped much of the coastline, with the erection of lookout towers and forts. This time is remembered at the German Occupation Museum, La Vallette Underground Military Museum, at the renovated gun site of Fort Hommet Gun Casemate, and also at the rather unusual and unexpected German Military Underground Hospital, a vast construction carved out of solid rock during the early 1940s.




Learn more about the island at the National Trust of Guernsey Folk Museum, which is housed within the grounds of an old country house and clearly illustrates how life was led some 100 years ago.

Art lovers will appreciate spending some time at the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery at Candie Gardens, which is actually based around the garden's Victorian bandstand and contains a wealth of Victorian artefacts, along with a cafe boasting excellent views stretching across the harbour as far as the neighbouring islands.
